Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve
In the language of the Mayans who inhabited this region, Sian Ka’an means “origin of the sky”.
The great wealth of flora and fauna of this Natural Protected Area (NPA) includes more than 300 species of resident and migratory birds, and is home to large nesting colonies of frigate birds, pelicans, roseate spoonbills, as well as dolphins, manatees, sea turtles, swamp crocodiles and river crocodiles.
It is also recognized for being one of the last homes of highly valued animal species such as the jaguar, puma, ocelot and different species of monkeys.
Because it is a priceless treasure for humanity, on December 11, 1987 it was included in the UNESCO list to be protected as a “Natural Asset” of our planet.
